The history of this force is the history of awakening, class resistance, and the revolutionary movement of the toiling masses of Kurdistan. In late 1978, the uprising of the masses in a great popular revolution shattered the yoke of monarchical despotism and dictatorship in order to create an opportunity for freedom and a humane life. Yet, in those very sweet moments of liberation, the dreadful nightmare of the domination of an extremely reactionary, anti-woman, and anti-freedom regime “one that was gradually preparing itself to seize the achievements of the revolution” cast its shadow over Iran. In this context, Kurdistan became a stronghold against the emerging religious fascism; a stronghold whose weapon of legitimate defense was called the “Peshmerga Force.”

At a time when the religious current had succeeded, through deception, conspiracy, and the initial wave of repression, in silencing the voice of the revolution and progressive forces in central Iran, the balance of power in Kurdistan was entirely different. In Kurdish society, due to the deep influence of leftist ideas, the active presence of political parties with popular support, and especially the existence of “Komala” with its socialist ideals, program, and strategy, religious reaction lacked a mass base.

Exploited workers demanded a better life; rural toilers, who had only recently been freed from the decaying remnants of the feudal system, feared losing their gains; women longed for equal rights and liberation from medieval laws; and broad sections of the population could no longer tolerate the burden of national and religious oppression. These accumulated aspirations, demands, and expectations found expression in a mass and organized resistance movement that was preparing itself for a historic struggle against the newly established regime that had diverted the revolution from its course.

At the beginning of this historic confrontation, the central government attempted to control Kurdistan by relying on feudal landlords, tribal chiefs, and local reactionaries who were terrified by the revolution and the awakening of the working people. By forming armed gangs, the feudal landlords threatened and harassed peasants and rural laborers in an effort to restore the decayed landlord-serf system. In response to this joint conspiracy of feudalism and the central regime, Komala called upon the working people of Kurdistan to organize and arm themselves. The formation of “Peasants’ Unions” was a revolutionary and mass response to this threat. As peasants and laborers organized themselves within these unions and consciously defended their rights through armed resistance, the armed gangs of the landlords were defeated and dispersed in a remarkably short period of time. This was the first major popular victory, demonstrating that the Peshmerga weapon served the cause of freedom and a better life for society.

The vibrant political and democratic atmosphere that had spread throughout Kurdistan transformed the region into a stronghold for the salvation and continuation of Iran’s nationwide revolution. The rapid expansion of Komala’s political and social influence and its extraordinary capacity for mobilizing and organizing the masses became evident through several unique and historic events:

The historic migration of the people of Marivan, which was recorded as a shining example of civil and organized resistance against the military presence of the army and the Revolutionary Guards.

Large-scale marches from across Kurdistan toward Marivan in solidarity with the people of that city.

The one-month general strike of the people of Sanandaj, which demonstrated mass solidarity and collective determination to expel the repressive forces of the Revolutionary Guards.

The disarmament of the reactionary “Sepah-e Rezgari,” a reactionary paramilitary force organized by regional sheikhs to weaken the leftist movement, which was dismantled through the revolutionary will of the people.

This revolutionary dynamism, the democratic achievements, and the radical vision that Kurdistan presented for the future of Iran’s revolution were never tolerable to the Islamic regime. After a period of deception, diplomatic maneuvering, and buying time, the Islamic Republic closed all doors to dialogue and negotiation. Even before launching its full-scale assault, it revealed its criminal nature through horrific massacres, including the brutal killings of defenseless people in the villages of “Qarna” and “Qalatan.”

Finally, on August 19, 1979, following Khomeini’s decree and fatwa, a large-scale, brutal, and comprehensive military assault on Kurdistan began. In response to this savage attack, Komala called on the people of Kurdistan to engage in comprehensive, armed, and mass resistance. The people of Kurdistan welcomed this call, and thus began the epic and eventful history of forty-seven years of armed resistance, a history filled with sacrifice, perseverance, and invaluable lessons of struggle.

Throughout these long years of resistance, Komala’s Peshmerga force has never been a traditional military force or a classic guerrilla organization. First and foremost, it has been a promoter and defender of an elevated, progressive, and humane culture against backward and patriarchal traditions. While creating epics on the battlefields, Komala’s Peshmerga also became a radical standard-bearer of equality between women and men. The active and armed participation of women fighters within the ranks of the Peshmerga challenged the traditional structures of society and defined a new concept of women’s liberation.

In every village, district, and city where it was present, this force left behind valuable legacies in the social, health, and educational spheres. Komala’s Peshmerga were teachers of awareness, doctors for the deprived, and companions of working people in the fields. Wherever the Peshmerga set foot, the seeds of awareness, equality, and socialism were sown.

The ultimate vision and strategy of Komala’s Peshmerga force for human liberation is a socialist revolution; a revolution whose principal driving force consists of the workers and toilers of society. This revolutionary perspective does not arise merely from wishful thinking, but is grounded in fundamental realities, class contradictions, economic inequalities, social deprivation, and the denial of civil and political freedoms. In Komala’s view, revolution means transferring political power from the hands of a despotic and exploitative minority to the majority who produce society’s wealth, and bringing about fundamental transformations in every sphere of life.

For this reason, the Peshmerga force does not relieve the masses of responsibility or leave them waiting for a purely military victory by the Peshmerga. On the contrary, it strengthens and institutionalizes self-confidence, independent organization, and reliance upon the inexhaustible power of the working people within society itself.

One of the historic and life-sustaining achievements of armed resistance in Kurdistan was the creation of a protective umbrella for the youth of the region during the devastating and reactionary eight-year Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988). The existence of liberated areas and the strong ranks of Komala’s Peshmerga provided a vital opportunity for the youth of Kurdistan to join a just, progressive, and liberating resistance rather than being sent as cannon fodder to the fronts of a reactionary war. Through countless sacrifices and by keeping the spirit of resistance alive, this force saved innumerable lives from destruction in the furnace of war. As a result of this organized resistance, Kurdish society suffered significantly fewer human and material losses during those eight years of devastating conflict compared to many other parts of Iran.

Although during the past two decades Komala’s Peshmerga, based on an objective assessment of new conditions, have not carried out offensive military operations against the forces of the Islamic Republic, this has never meant and does not mean questioning the legitimacy, authenticity, or historical necessity of armed resistance within the framework of the “right to self-defense” in our strategy. The objective reality of history is that armed struggle was never the first choice of the people of Kurdistan; rather, it was imposed upon society through the regime’s brutal aggression. The people wanted freedom, and because they were determined to defend the democratic achievements of the revolution, they were compelled to take up arms.

They did not resort to violence; instead, they stood against one of the most brutal repressive apparatuses of modern history and defended their human dignity. During those early years, when the Peshmerga temporarily pushed back the regime’s forces and liberated Kurdistan, they demonstrated unique and valuable examples of civil life, councils, freedom of expression, and democratic administration, examples that serve as a model for the future of all Iran.

Today, the awakened society of Kurdistan, carrying a wealth of valuable historical experience, is engaged in shaping newer and more advanced forms of mass struggle. Unified, broad-based political general strikes have today become an effective, established, and paralyzing weapon against the ruling authorities. a method of struggle that achieves the greatest political and organizational gains with the lowest human cost.

The formation of enduring civil movements, local networks, and the training of grassroots leaders in universities, factories, and neighborhoods has placed society on a path of full preparedness. The magnificent expression of this preparedness became clearly visible in the revolutionary “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising. This movement, whose philosophy and central slogan are rooted in the progressive political culture of Komala’s Peshmerga force, points toward society’s clear and irreversible path to final victory.

Forty-seven years have passed since the beginning of this turbulent journey. The generation that took up arms in the late 1970s with empty hands but hearts full of love for socialism and freedom has now grown old. Thousands of passionate young people joined the ranks of this force over the decades, created epics, lost their lives, or saw their hair turn gray along this path.

However, what has remained alive, dynamic, and enduring throughout all these years is a profound historical tradition that Komala’s Peshmerga has instilled in the fabric of this society: the tradition of never bowing before a dictator, the tradition of absolute equality between women and men, the tradition of relying on the deprived and working masses, and the aspiration to build a world free from classes and exploitation.

“Komala Peshmerga Day” is a day to honor each and every one of those devoted individuals, those passionate souls, and those red stars who laid the foundations of this noble tradition with their blood and their lives. This day is a renewal of commitment by new generations to the great ideals of freedom and social justice an ideal that still has a long road ahead before its final realization in the bright future of a free and socialist Iran, and along that path, the weapons of awareness, organization, and leadership will serve as the guiding force.

On the occasion of Komala Peshmerga Day, we honor the memory of Comrade “Saeed Moeini,” the first Peshmerga and the first fallen member of Komala, after whom Komala Peshmerga Day was named in remembrance of his life and the day of his death. We also commemorate the memory of the thousands of fighters and honorable individuals who lost their lives in various arenas of struggle against one of the most brutal and dark-minded dictatorships of this era, and we extend our salutations to their proud and steadfast families.

Central Committee of Komala
(Kurdistan Organization of the Communist Party of Iran)

June 2026

[85
33,24,10,8,11,119,9,15

post-3036","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-komala-statements","tag-abroad-committee-of-the-communist-party-of-iran","tag-communist-party-of-iran","tag-cpi","tag-komala","tag-kurdistan","tag-peshmerga","tag-statement","tag-war
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-scaled.jpg",2560,2560,false
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-300x300.jpg",300,300,true
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-768x768.jpg",640,640,true
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-1024x1024.jpg",640,640,true],"1536x1536":["https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-1536x1536.jpg",1536,1536,true],"2048x2048":["https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-2048x2048.jpg",2048,2048,true
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-80x80.jpg",80,80,true
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-300x225.jpg",300,225,true
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-1115x715.jpg",1115,715,true
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-800x500.jpg",800,500,true
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-1024x1024.jpg",1024,1024,true
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-540x340.jpg",540,340,true
https://cpiran.net/english/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1000121235-400x250.jpg",400,250,true
admin
Komala Statements
["GET
