Yesterday, ILNA, the Iranian Labour News Agency, once again revealed a bitter reality that millions of Iranian households experience every day in a detailed report. The report examined the housing crisis and astronomical rents that have driven tenants into the depths of poverty. It paints a clear picture of families in which every member works merely to be able to pay the monthly rent; families who, as soon as they pay one month’s rent, immediately begin worrying about how they will pay the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reality is that the recent war and its economic consequences have deepened the wound of the housing crisis. Housing deposits have reached unattainable levels, and there is no longer any difference between affluent and deprived neighborhoods in the cities; everywhere, prices have placed tenants in a catastrophic situation. This comes as a large portion of these same tenants have lost their jobs because of the consequences of the war, or their wages have failed to keep pace with the rapid post-war inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another noteworthy point highlighted in the report is that poverty is not affecting only tenants. Some landlords are themselves retired or disabled and consider rental income their only source of revenue to cover heavy medical expenses or support their unemployed children. This situation demonstrates that, in the absence of any social support from the state, both sides have lost their psychological and economic security and have been set against one another; neither the landlord nor the tenant is the primary cause of this disaster. Rather, both are victims of a system that has no commitment to providing housing for its citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to statistics, more than eight million Iranian households are deprived of owning a housing unit. If the standard is adequate and safe housing, this number rises significantly and encompasses nearly all Iranian families, except for the wealthy minority and government officials; from those living in urban outskirts and deteriorated neighborhoods to approximately 700,000 young couples who join the queue of housing applicants every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The housing crisis is not a new phenomenon; it is a legacy inherited by the Islamic Republic from the capitalist Pahlavi regime. However, the capitalist nature of the new regime has made this problem far more severe than it was before 1979. Throughout its existence, the Islamic Republic has repeatedly promised to eliminate the housing problem, but in practice it has provided adequate housing only for regime loyalists and the wealthy. The projects designed for the middle classes have, for the most part, ended in failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A clear example of this failure is the “Mehr Housing Project,” a scheme that, instead of resolving the crisis, became a breeding ground for speculation and widespread rent-seeking, and itself contributed to further increases in housing prices. Many of the families who were misled by the government’s promotion of this project are now facing even greater problems. After selling their limited assets and borrowing from banks, they paid millions of tomans into this government scheme, and they are now wandering in search of recovering money whose real value in the market has drastically declined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the capitalist system of the Islamic Republic, as in every other capitalist system, housing is a commodity, and investment in this sector is governed by the law of profit rather than by meeting society’s actual needs. No capitalist system, because of its class nature, produces housing to meet the needs of the homeless. The Islamic Republic, as a repressive regime serving capital, has monopolized society’s wealth through the state and its security institutions, while at the same time shaping its economic policies according to the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund and the rules of the free market. Such a government, with its deeply institutionalized corruption that reveals itself more every day, is in no way capable of resolving the housing crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As long as the capitalist system remains in place, the housing crisis will remain fundamentally unsolvable. Historical experience has shown that only the organized and collective struggle of workers and the laboring and deprived masses can resolve this problem. The experience of Russia after the October Revolution, as well as that of the Scandinavian countries during the era of the welfare state, testifies to this reality: whenever the working class has been politically organized and has fought for its demands, including adequate housing, it has been able to force ruling capitalist governments to retreat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, no reformist promise or change of government within the framework of this same system will resolve this crisis. The only path forward is the organization and united struggle of the working class and the deprived sections of society; a struggle that must fight not only for better wages, but also for the fundamental right to shelter and a humane life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
